This quite recent publication from Lars Müller Publishers tells the story, through texts and many photos, of a town in Brazil,
Helvécia, whose long-forgotten past needs to be revived. For as its name suggests, Helvécia was a prosperous colony of mostly Swiss coffee-growers – and their many enslaved laborers. A necessary history, a joyful photographic look at the town’s inhabitants today, a serious reflection on a shameful past reality, a pleasure and an honor to translate. Would that the other recent book brought out by the same publisher had had as happy an outcome!
